Mayor Nutter’s New Mobile Lecterns June 18, 2012

Posted by benchdogdesign in Works-in-Progress.

Last fall, we shared our design concepts for Mayor Nutter’s new mobile lecterns.  Bench Dog Design was selected for the project through an invited RFP process last summer.  We’ve been working with the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability to finalize two different designs, and are excited to announce that the first lectern is currently being fabricated! We expect both to be completed before the end of the month. They will replace the current lectern that the Mayor uses when he gives speeches in the community, attends ribbon-cuttings, or speaks at any official event held somewhere other than City Hall.  Having two options will make it much easier for Mayor Nutter to attend back-to-back functions, without his staff scrambling to make sure that the official lectern is transported in time.  [Ever wonder what the difference is between a lectern and a podium? We did too- check out the answer here.]

Time for a new look?

The first lectern features an elegant, slightly tapered form with exposed steel corners. Three sides will be finished with custom wood panels built from reclaimed oak beams.  The wood for this piece was sourced from a large rowhouse that was being torn down in the Southwest Center City/ Graduate Hospital neighborhood. All finishes will be eco-friendly, non toxic products.

Large Lectern

The second design incorporates an open steel frame with a reclaimed wood ‘skin’ that wraps around the metal structure.  Its airy, lightweight feel creates a casual contrast to the more formal look of the first lectern. Both structures are being hand crafted at our newly relocated woodshop at Viking Mills in Kensington, directly across from the Coral Street Arts House. The steel frames are being fabricated by Paul Lichtenstein of  Twelve26 Studio, located just west of Kensington.

Small Lectern

We are incredibly proud to be working on this project and appreciate the City of Philadelphia’s support of small businesses and local artisans. This project was conceived by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and intended to represent the City’s commitment toward sustainability and the goals set forth in Greensworks Philadephia to become the number one green city in America.
